We Lost a Good One

Yesterday I learned of the passing of my good friend, Joan Miller. She had been ill for a while, and fought the good fight. She stayed positive through it all and that's how I will surely remember her.

I often saw Joan and her husband Reg at the SCGS Jamboree. We also had good times at the inaugural RootsTech. My favorite memory is definitely the day we went to the Family Curator's house to stuff swag bags for Jamboree. We had a good dinner and plenty of laughs.

Last fall, Joan came to Houston for the Family Tree DNA conference. I picked her up at her hotel and took her to dinner. I did not expect that would be the last time I would see her.

You never know when the last visit will come. Make every day and every interaction count, people.

Though my heart is heavy, my mind keeps filling up with good memories of my times with Joan. I cannot help but to celebrate her life.

The genealogy world lost a good one. Here are several tributes:

Geneabloggers.com: In Memoriam: Joan Miller

Your Genetic Genealogist: In Loving Memory of Joan Miller

Genealogy Leftovers: In Memory of Joan Miller

Geniaus: My Mate Joan

It times like these that remind me what a wonderful genealogy community we have. Go forth and do good things. Joan would want it that way.

  2. I didn't know Joan, either, although I feel like I did from seeing her picture and blog. And now I feel like I know her just a little more.

  3. Like Grant and Debi, I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Joan either. Sounds like she was a wonderful lady.

  5. I am so sad to hear of Joan's passing. I only met her once, when she gave a presentation about DNA at an Alberta Family Histories Society meeting. I had hoped to learn more from her. I will find a way to volunteer at the AFHS in her memory.
